Deviant Wolfe Brewing at Historic Downtown Sanford Review
A few months ago, I posted about what I think are the best Orlando breweries. One of these, I had yet to visit, but have tried and loved many times at brew festivals. That brewery is Deviant Wolfe Brewing which I finally got the change to check out recently.
Being in Sanford, this craft brewery is a bit out of the way of Orlando, but so worth it. In less than two years, Deviant Wolfe Brewing has made a name for itself brewing delicious beers of all types from IPA’s to Lagers. If you get a chance to check out the brewery, here is everything you need to know about Deviant Wolfe Brewing!
Location and Atmosphere
Deviant Wolfe Brewing is located in Historic Downtown Sanford, near Henry’s Depot and Palate Coffee. There are many bars and even a couple beer bars in the area, but this is still the best spot for craft brews! Like many of the spots along downtown, it has a simple brick storefront with a couple tables outside.
Inside, you will fell at home at this cozy brewery. There is a long bar and many tables, so it is not hard to find a spot to sit, unless you go on a busy weekend night. The mural of mountain ranges adds to the rugged vibe at Deviant Wolfe Brewing, as well as the view of the brew tanks in the back. Overall, you will get a friendly feel for the place and between the music and the beer it is easy to want to stay a while.
The Beer at Deviant Wolfe
Since opening in 2018, Deviant Wolfe has come out with a variety of brews in all sorts of styles. It would be hard to peg them as a certain style because I have enjoyed ales, sours and stouts here. I would say Deviant Wolfe is brewing more modern beer styles than traditional ones.
You will not find core beers either, as their tap list changes frequently. However, they try to have a lot of favorites in stock at all times. Sourmanjaro is probably the beer they are best known for it, as it is an intriguing coffee sour. I was a little skeptical of it, but the lemon and floral coffee flavors really good well together! This is a great beer to try that really showcases the creativity of the places. Other beers Deviant Wolfe Brewing is known for include Matturday’s, The Better than Never IPA and the Hailstorm Stout.
At the brewery, you can purchase pints or a flight of five tasters. They also have a big selection of cans, and crowlers and growlers to go. Prices are similar to most local breweries with pints for $6 and under and $16 for a 4 pack. They also have shirts and hats for sale if you want to show your love!
Our Experience
We went to Deviant Wolfe on a Thursday afternoon during the pandemic, so it was basically empty, which we were hoping for! We had a great time chatting with the bartender about missing beer festivals this year, before she got us set up with a flight each. There were at least ten different types of choose from, so it was tough to decide!
We tried most of the beers there, but the ones that stood out to me were Pineapple Troll Cake, Matturdays, and Cry Me a Brasberry. Those are all sour beers that had a fruity flavor without being super tart. The Pineapple Troll Cake was especially with tasty with its balance of pineapple, rum soaked oak chips and lactose.
We can never leave a brewery without getting more for later and luckily that had a lot of different cans available. Some of the brews were only available in cans, so don’t miss checking out this cooler. This is how we got to try Infinite Zeros and Bitter Memories, two of their excellent IPA’s. The cans were similarly priced to other breweries at about $16 per 4 pack.
They also offered growlers and crowlers, if you want a brew that’s on tap but not in cans. We loaded up with as many cans as we can carry, because we probably won’t make it back to Deviant Wolfe Brewing anymore. I wish it was closer to me though, because the beers really were excellent and I am still waiting to savor my last cans of it!
Events at Deviant Wolfe Brewing
During non-pandemic times, Deviant Wolfe Brewing is one of the most enjoyable places to be, especially on the weekend. They frequently host lively events such as live music nights, BYO Game night, and even a scavenger hunt through Downtown Sanford! This is in addition to their lecture series “Campfire Stories”, where members of the community share something they are passionate about.
Other events to look out for include seasonal beer and food pairings. This in the past has included Beer and Christmas Cookies, Beer and Bacon, and more. On a weekly basis you can find group runs and yoga classes hosted by the brewery. Deviant Wolfe has run club on Wednesday and yoga on Sunday, so you can burn off those beer calories!
