The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is one of the most unique and fascinating attractions in Florida. Established in 1893, it’s one of the oldest continuously running attractions in the state and has grown into a world-class zoological park.

From rare albino alligators to stunning, wild bird sightings, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Here are ten must-sees for when you visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Guide

1. Maximo the Saltwater Crocodile

One of the most awe-inspiring residents of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm is Maximo, a massive saltwater crocodile. Maximo measures over 15 feet long and weighs more than 1,200 pounds!!

He’s one of the largest crocodiles in captivity and watching him is a humbling experience that showcases the sheer power and majesty of these ancient reptiles. Though this zoo has all sorts of impressive reptiles, you do not want to miss Maximo!

2. Albino Alligators

This Zoological Park is one of the few places in the world where you can see rare albino alligators. These striking creatures are white due to a genetic mutation that prevents them from producing melanin.

These gators are right by the entrance and will stop you in your tracks with their pale skin and pink eyes! Albino alligators are incredibly rare in the wild, so seeing them up close is a special experience.

4. Gomek Forever

Gomek was one of the largest and most famous crocodiles ever kept in captivity, and although he passed away in 1997, his legacy lives on. A life-sized taxidermy display of Gomek is on exhibit, allowing visitors to appreciate the size of this legendary crocodile.

Gomek measured over 17 feet long and was beloved by visitors for his calm demeanor and impressive size. In addition to the preserved version of him, you can also see videos of him in action here.

5. The Land of Crocodiles

The Land of Crocodiles exhibit showcases one of the most diverse collections of crocodilian species in the world. Here, you can see nearly every species of crocodile, alligator, caiman, and gharial, including some of the rarest and most endangered!

This exhibit highlights the incredible diversity of size, shape, and habitats within the crocodilian family and offers insight into the different behaviors of these powerful reptiles.

6. The Python Cave

If you aren’t squeamish about snakes, venture into the Python Cave and see some huge ones up close! This exhibit features massive reticulated pythons and Burmese pythons, as well as exhibits about their strength.

7. Exotic Birds

In addition to native birds, you can also see feathered friends (or foes) from around the world, including Africa! Feeding demonstrations for vultures, storks, and cranes occur daily and are an exciting sight!

Even more intense than watching a Hooded Vulture feed, is seeing a real-life cassowary here! These colorful creatures are direct descendants of dinosaurs and are known to be the most dangerous birds in the world! If you rather see cute birds than scary ones, be sure to check out the toucans, macaws, and cockatoos instead.

8. The Fossil Exhibit

This zoological park offers more than just living animals; it also delves into the history of these incredible creatures with its fossil exhibit. This exhibit features fossils and skeletal remains of ancient reptiles, including prehistoric crocodilians and turtles.

It’s a fascinating look into the deep history of reptiles and how they have evolved over millions of years. The exhibit provides context for the modern-day species you see in the park, showing just how long these animals have been around.

9. The Sloth Landing

In addition to its reptilian residents, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm is home to some lovable mammals, including sloths. This exhibit allows you to get up close to these slow-moving, tree-dwelling creatures.

Though you will likely see them sleeping, I always enjoy seeing what silly positions they find themselves in!

For those looking for a bit of adventure, the Crocodile Crossing zip line experience is a must-try. This thrilling zip line course takes you high above the alligator and crocodile exhibits, offering a bird’s-eye view of the park’s most dangerous inhabitants.

There are two courses to choose from, with one offering lower and shorter lines for beginners and the other lasting about 90 minutes with more advanced obstacles. It’s an exhilarating way to see the park from a completely different perspective!
