It’s Plastic Free July, which makes its the perfect time to announce my partnership with Eco At Heart. This company is dedicated to making the best stainless steel straws so that you can stop using the plastic ones that are polluting the ocean.
The negative effects of straws are getting a lot of attention lately and I am happy to see people are realizing the impact of throwing these out into landfills everyday. Starbucks is planning to phase out their signature green straws to be replaced with cups that have a small indent to sip through and McDonald’s is going to only offer paper straws soon. These are awesome initiatives, as millions of people hit these drive-thrus every day.
Personally, I find paper straws to disintegrate too fast and I have read that sipping Starbucks drinks will expose teeth to more damage because the caffeine and sugar will come in contact. That’s where Eco At Heart’s straws come in as the solution since you can still suck up your drink without having to taste damp paper.
Eco At Heart sent me a box of the five wide reusable stainless steel drinking straws. They also have thin and bent options. I have been using them for a couple of weeks and have loved every aspect. They are perfect for my morning smoothies and since there is a Starbucks close by to me, I have made an effort not to grab a straw and then pop one of these in when I get home. I don’t know if I will ever reach a point where I start bringing these to restaurants, but they would be easy to store in your car if you frequent fast food places.
They are dishwasher safe and even come with a little cleaning brush to run through to get any sticky smoothie seeds out. They also are BPA free and non-toxic so you do not have to worry about chemicals or any aluminum taste. You can buy some through Amazon at this link or on their website.
I did not really use straws at home much before I got these and now I have found they are a fun addition to summer cocktails. Andrew and I decided to treat ourselves the other day and drink right out of a pineapple. He hollowed it out, juiced the fruit and then mixed it with rose and some crushed ice, like I saw on this recipe here. Then we poured it back into the pineapple and had a refreshing drink for the beach! The straws worked perfectly for this, but the pineapples did leak a little. It is still a fun and easy way to brighten up you summer, so give it a try next time you have a relaxing afternoon!
I can’t recommend these straws enough, as they really are a high-quality product that can replace the harmful, plastic straws. In addition to using these at home and Starbucks, I have been trying to avoid any straw use at restaurants since the start of Plastic Free July, as well as plastic grocery bags. I hope you will join me!
