Sailfish Brewing Co. at Fort Pierce Review
I have been seeing Sailfish Brewing Co. beer at restaurants and bars on the Space Coast for a few years, but I finally got around to visiting the brewery last month. If you are like me and don’t know a lot about fishing, a sailfish is an actual type of fish with a large dorsal fin. This fish is the logo for the brewery and very fitting for such a Floridian spot. Sailfish Brewing Co. really epitomizes the tropical lifestyle with their beer and taproom.
We happened to be going to a wedding in Jensen Beach and couldn’t resist stopping here. Despite trying Sailfish before, I didn’t have much of an opinion of the brewery. However, after trying many different brews here, I firmly believe this is a place beer lovers should check out!
Location and Atmosphere
Sailfish Brewing Co. is located right in the heart of Downtown Fort Pierce. The area is mainly a fishing town for people wanting a quiet vacation spot. There are a few other restaurants, but it is not hard to spot Sailfish with their logo painted on the side of the building.
The brewery actually started in the third oldest house in Fort Pierce! Through the years they have expanded, so the new taproom has plenty of room inside and out. There’s a huge wrap around bar, in addition to plenty of tables and high tops. There are plenty of games for all ages as well including cornhole, and even space for a band, as they have live music often.
Core Beers and More at Sailfish Brewing Co.
I think part of the reason I underestimated Sailfish Brewing Co. is because their core beers are pretty simple. You can find the Tag and Release Amber, the Sunrise City IPA and the Hammer-Down Trippel. They are all solid brews, but as readers know, I am a lover of juicy IPA’s and sours. The brewery has so many options to please someone like me though and I hope they start to distribute more soon!
The beer is very affordable here with a glass ranging from $5 to $7. They do crowlers and growlers as well in the $8 to $28 range. The flights are $10 for four 5 oz pours, and you can get 8 oz pours for $3. If you go Monday through Friday from 3- 6 PM there is happy hour where you get a dollar off.
In addition to their own beer, they have guest taps with ciders and a small wine list. I believe they have soft drinks as well if you happen to bring your family. I was tempted to try a cider, but the beer is so good, that I recommend sticking to it since you can buy Ace cider anywhere else!
Beers We Tried
Andrew and I each got a flight to start (of course) and I don’t think I have ever seen such a pretty flight. The beers are so colorful! This is mainly because we both chose sour beers, since there were so many to try. Here is what we got during our visit.
- Passing Lane Gose (4.3% ABV) – Barrel aged pineapple margarita beer.
- PBS Sour (4.3% ABV)- Peach, blackberry and blueberry sour.
- Double Dry Hopped Fish Whistle (5.7% ABV) – Pale Ale with Australian hops.
- Dont Poke the Bees (8% ABV) – Imperial blonde with blackberries and bee pollen.
- Huk L. Berry (4.3% ABV) – Fruited sour with blueberries and cinnamon.
- Blackberry Bramble (4.3% ABV) – Kettle sour with blackberries, lime and mint.
- Sour S.M.A.S.H. (6% ABV) – Kettle sour pale ale with citra hops.
Across the board, these beers were amazing! The fruity sours weren’t too overpowering and had the most refreshing taste.
Our favorite was the Passing Lane Gose, which is sadly not available right now but hopefully will be back. I have had tequila barrel aged beers before and usually find them too dry. This one tasted like the dreamiest margarita though! It was the perfect mix of sweet and sour with the slightest hint of tequila.
The other sours were excellent as well. We especially enjoyed the use of blackberry in so many. This is an underrated fruit for flavoring beer in my opinion.
The only non-sour we had was the double dry hopped pale ale and you can tell they are just as good making dank beers as the fruity ones! There were plenty of options for people who prefer IPA’s or stouts to sours, but we couldn’t resist them on this day.
Sailfish Brewing Co. Food Options
We had lunch beforehand at Taco Dive next door. It was decent, but nothing amazing. When I saw the pizza at Sailfish Brewing Co., I started regretting our lunch decision. The main offering is 16″ pizzas whole or by the slice, as well as flatbreads. They smelled and looked delicious and would definitely complement a cold brew!
There is a whole menu of appetizers at Sailfish, which options ranging from mac and cheese bites to chicken wings. It’s definitely bar foods, but that works well for here. You can currently order food for there or to-go, but they plan to have a delivery service set up soon. For now you can call ahead if you are really craving the pizza. Good luck not grabbing a six pack while you are there though!
Sailfish Brewing Company Events
One other awesome thing about this brewery is all the local events. I was kind of jealous that I don’t live closer when I saw all the flyers on the wall. The first event Sailfish Brewing Co. had was a food and beer pairing dinner with other local breweries and restaurants. They also have a beer mile race with a fun after party at the brewery!
In addition to these one off events, they also do trivia every Thursday night and Bingo every Monday night. On Fridays and Saturdays there is often live music. October seems like an especially good month to go because they have an Oktoberfest day and a zombie themed pub crawl! It seems like this brewery really strives to come up with fun experiences for their loyal patrons.
